Parent to Parent

This fall Roosevelt Elementary started a "Parent to Parent Mentoring " program. The intent of the program is to help parents help their children. Four parents have volunteered to lead the discussions and help other parents with ideas, solutions, that have worked with their kids become successful in school. We have met three times so far this year. We meet at Roosevelt school and have a light supper and just talk about how things are going, how we can help each other, and gather a lot of good tools and activities to use at home with kids. We have two teachers and myself that attend also to help facilitate the time we spend together. It has been very beneficial to the staff to hear what the needs of the parents and children are once they leave our building. Many different topics and issues that parents are confronted with are discussed, however the main focus is on Reading and Reading Strategies. We sit together at a large table and just talk about education and children. The meetings are usually scheduled for about an hour long but with most things once you start talking it gets to be longer. If you are interested in attending we will meet in March and then in May. We will be sending information out about the times and dates in February for the meeting in March. We hope by making this available to everyone who wants to come that we can build a strong connection between home and school.
